Product Review: Curls Passion Fruit Curl Control Paste

In my obsessions with shopping at Target, I stumbled upon the Curls Passion Fruit Curl Control Paste for $7.99.  At first, I decided to watch the item for a few months before purchasing because when looking at the consistency of the paste in the store, it reminded me of a gel.  Usually gels, weigh down my hair and I didn’t think it would be wise to purchase a product that would counter act what I wanted to do.  Still curious, I read a few reviews for the paste and one in particular by CoilyBella.com and afterward decided to pick up the product and try it out.  I decided that if it was too heavy for my hair, at least I could use it to smooth and hold my edges– that would not be an issue at all.  I have to say though, I am very delighted with my purchase and I will share with you why:

Scent: Like all Curls products, this paste has an awesomely sweet scent.  It reminds me of vanilla.  The scent is light, airy and it lasts long after application.  After styling my hair for the day, I could still slightly smell the product.  This is a huge plus for me because I love to have hair that smells respectable and not chemical like…(remember Jheri Curl Activator)?!

Price: For a Curls’ product…and Natural Hair product in general, the price point of $7.99 is pretty good.  You get 4 ounces of this product for the price, but as you will see later, 4 ounces is a lot of product for the Passion Fruit Control Paste because (well in my situation) you only have to apply a little bit to get the desired effect.

Consistency: I stated earlier that the consistency of the product freaked me out a little.  When I was examining the product in Target, during my investigatory initiations with the paste, it kinda freaked me out because it looked like a gel and jiggled in the jar.  LOL.  When I finally opened the jar, and touched the product, it was more pomade like and was very sticky.  When applying the product, it provided a lot of hold but with no residue and issue of extreme product build up like normal gel does for me when I use it.

Ingredients: Water, Ceteareth-25, PEG-7 Glyceryl Cocoate, Glycerin, Isostearyl Isostearate, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Shea Butter, Mango Seed Butter, Jojoba Oil, Vitamin E Oil, Tetrahexyldecyl, Ascorbate, Passion Fruit Oil, Evening Primrose Oil, Hydroxyptopyltrimonium, Hydrolyzed Maize Starch, Panthenol, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance

My Overall Review/Reaction:

Well, first, I will tell you how I used the product to obtain the review that I am sharing with you.  I applied the paste to moisturized hair.  The first time that I used it, I used an oil mix on top of day old hair.  I sectioned my hair into 6 sections.  After applying the oil mix, I took less than a nickel sized portion of the paste on each section of my hair and twisted.  I applied my satin cap and untwisted in the morning.  (As a prelude, you all know my hair does not hold twist styles because of my hair’s texture and thinness. ) Well, let me tell you, I was in 100 degree weather with Louisiana humidity and my twist out looked fantabolous the whole day.  I was waiting for a significant amount of crunch or product build up…or something…and I didn’t see that at all.  My hair was highly moisturized, bouncy and smelled terrific. The product also provided a lot of stretch to my twists.  My style was elongated without being stringy.  I thought this was too good to be true and used the paste again for an updo.

I never have too many issues with my edges, especially when my hair is moisturized.  I recently applied an oil mix to my hair and then less than a dime sized portion of the paste to my edges and my curly kitchen area for an updo.  Once again, I was amazed.  The hold was unbelievable.  My hair was still soft and not hard or crunchy.  My updo lasted the whole humid day without an extreme case of the frizzies and when I took my hair down, it moved normally as if I had no holding product in it at all.

If you know me, I usually keep an updo style for a few days, and yes indeed, I did not have to re-apply any product during this time.  My hair held the moisture and looked great.  It was so soft and shiny; you would have never known I used pomade in my hair.

I have to say, I found a keeper.  I love the scent, price and overall effect that the product has on my hair.  I also love the fact that I can obtain this product on the ground (Target) and not have to purchase online.  My hair retained a significant amount of moisture, didn’t have a case of the crunchies or product build up and moved and smelled awesome throughout the day.
